Kashmiri Proverbs Volume II

The proverbs included in this collection are concise statements that primarily draw wisdom from traditional sources. They express universally held truths, offer advice based on common sense and experiences, and encapsulate the values and beliefs of a society. The remarkable aspect of these proverbs lies in their timeless relevance and the careful refinement they have undergone throughout generations.   It is worth noting that these proverbs are widely used in colloquial Kashmiri language, adding a touch of distinctiveness and flavor. They can be considered as the "spicy jargon" of the Kashmiri language.   This compilation presents 151 new Kashmiri proverbs, with each proverb translated into English, Hindi, and Urdu to ensure broader accessibility and assist readers in pronouncing them correctly. The inclusion of detailed descriptions, interpretations, and usage examples, whenever possible, enhances the reader's understanding and engagement with each proverb.   Readers will find noticeable improvements in the quality of presentation, language, and ease of comprehension compared to the first volume. These proverbs aim to evoke nostalgic memories among Kashmiris, specifically, while also garnering a positive reception from other regions by drawing parallels with similar proverbs in their respective languages.   About Author Dr. Raj Kachru:-   Dr Raj Kachru, a Kashmiri Pandit, hails from the family of 18th century’s leading Kashmiri Poetess, Arnimal, known for poignant poetry, and Munshi Bhawani Dass Pandit Kachru, an erudite Persian scholar and historian at Rainawari, Srinagar, Kashmir. Shaarada Akshar Gyaan (शारदा अक्षर ज्ञान)

SHARDA SCRIPT Sharda is the oldest script used in Kashmiri Language and in ancient times Kashmir too was called Sharda Desh because of the sacred Shrine of Mother Goddess Sharda situated at the confluence of river Krishan Ganga and Madumati in the Village Shardi currently in occupied Kashmir by Pakistan. The Goddess in the temple is worshipped as embodiment of total energy that sustains the universe and as such is also worshiped as the goddess of knowledge or Saraswati as well. The temple was most famous in whole of India and as such Adi Guru Shankaracharya visited the Shrine in 788-810A.D. The place was also a noted centre for learning Hindu Scriptures. The famous Vedic philosopher Swami Ramanuj Acharya came to the shrine in the 12th Century A.D. Muslim scholars like Abul Fazal and Albruni as well came to the Shrine. The great Antiquary, Mark Arul Stein visited the Shrine in September 1892, Sharda script excelled upto 10th and 11th Century A.D. and came up to the mark of the cultural magnificence of the times. It was followed by Sanskrit script but Sharda script continued as the basic script and the Kashmiri Pandits till this day are using the script in the preparations of Horoscopes. The basic progress in the knowledge in the land of mother goddess of learning went on touching the new spiritual height. In the first Century A.D. under the patriarchship of a Shivite and Bodh Scholar of Kashmir Nagarjunas who gave out to the world Mahayana Bodhism while Kashmiri Trika Shavism continued to make the lives of people peaceful and well meaning. Mahayana Boddhism went from Kashmir to Central Asia, Malaysia and further to Japan. Kashmiri Trika Shavism which is Shiva Shakti worship spread from the Himalayan heights to extreme South and making Indian people as one entity. This all came from Sharda Desha or Kashmir and started from Sharda Script. But unfortunately this back bone script of Kashmir is presently almost dying although Sharda Manuscripts are available in all the major research libraries. Jammu Rughnath Mandir Library established by Dogra Maharaja Ranbir Singh has collected a good number of Sharda manuscripts of rarity. These treasures could help in consolidating the Sharda script. No doubt Muslim fanatic rulers of Kashmir have destroyed most of the Sharda and Sanskrit manuscripts but yet whatever is left behind in the research libraries and in position of exiled Kashmiri Hindus, a good start can be made if some dedicated efforts are made in the name of fostering Indian tradition These books come in Two Parts Bhaag 1 & 2 Bhaag 1 Rs. 70/- Bhaag  2 Rs. 100/-  ..

The Odyssey of Kashmiri Pandits |Destination-Homeland-Panun Kashmir

This book The Odyssey of Kashmiri Pandits presents the pathetic life of Kashmiri Pandits in exile. The Mass Exodus from their homes in the year 1990, have left them as refugees in their own country. The original inhabitants of Kashmir, scattered all over the world, are now haunted by nostalgia of Paradise on Earth. They were hounded out, after inflicting taunts, physical abuse, miseries, loot, and selective killing. The exiled community hopes to go back to their home land some day. What could have been the reasons for all these miseries? Were the killers caught?   About Author Dr. M.L.BHAT:-  Dr. M.L.BHAT was born in a tiny village in Kashmir. He was forced to leave his home in 1990. He lived in exile for twenty-seven long years, which prompted him to pen down this tragic story. He is married to Champa Dhar and spends his retired life in Jammu. He has two children...

Tral In Pulwama Kashmir

History has its own ways of recording events and drawing inferences. It deals with the past, deliberates over the present and silently ruminates over the future. The wise draw a lesson from it while the naïve consider giving it use-and-throw treatment. Some events are firmly rooted in logic and are well documented. However, there are also events with obliterated contours that leave space for surmises or subjective interpretation. This book, 'Tral in Pulwama, Kashmir' is a voluntary attempt to retrieve and record events that otherwise were in the throes of extinction and no future generation would have even the remotest idea of its antiquity and historicity. The reason for this dismal prospect springs from the extirpation of the entire ancient community of Kashmiri Pandits from their millennia-old homeland...

Vijayshwar Janampatri (Zatuk)

Horoscopes and almanacs have become an integral part of Kashmiri Pandit life. Known as zatuk and nechipanir in the Kashmiri language, they reveal the degree of obsessive interest that the community has in astrology, the average Pandit refusing to do anything without consulting the stars. Till the early years of the 20th century, the zeituks as well as the nechipatris (<Skt. naksatra patrika) were illustrated, with miniature paintings at the top of a scroll of paper as one of their features. Planetary positions and configurations in the horoscopes generally illustrated by means of diagrams of the nine planetary deities (navagraha) were also depicted in some. Here it was the priest who combined in himself the role of the artist as well, producing paintings in the style of traditional Kashmiri miniatures. The priest-artist generally painted images of popular deities with Sharikii, Ragnyii, Durga, Shiva and PArvati, Shiva's family, Ganesha, and sometimes Svachhanda Bhairava or Vishnu on his Garuda as his repertoire. The family priest gifted these items to his patron (yajantana) without charging any specific amount for them and leaving it to the generosity of the latter to compensate him for his labour. The paintings were executed within an outer frame shaped generally like the trefoil arch of the Kashmiri temple architecture with the motif of a saffron flower at the top and some other places. This motif was a distinctive mark of these paintings. Another peculiarly Kashmiri feature was that the female deities were often portrayed with their feminine contours subdued. The lion, or rather the tiger, who is the mount of Durgd and her manifestations such as Sharika, Ragnya etc., appears too tame and gentle. Often there is a canopy or a parasol over the heads of the deities portrayed. The iconography is conventional and the range of colours rather limited, the emphasis being on the image of the deity in conformity with the ritual context. However, with the introduction of printing, the practice of painting the horoscopes and almanacs with hand gradually disappeared, bringing to an end a long and interesting tradition of ritual art in Kashmir which made religious paintings available to a large section of the society.    Kashmiri Bazaar brings Vijeshwar Janampatri (Zatuk) directly from Vijeshwar kendra to your doorstep. Yagnopavit Dress (Mekhala Poshaak)

Yagnopavit Dress: A Garment of Tradition and Spiritual Significance In the intricate tapestry of Indian culture, clothing often serves as a powerful vessel to carry tradition, values, and spirituality. Among the many iconic garments that symbolize these elements, the Yagnopavit Dress stands out as a beautiful embodiment of heritage and spirituality. This attire, with its roots in age-old customs, continues to hold a profound place in the hearts of many. Unveiling the Yagnopavit Dress: The Yagnopavit Dress is primarily worn by young boys during significant Hindu rituals and ceremonies, most notably the Upanayana, or sacred thread ceremony. This ceremonial dress consists of two essential components: the dhoti, a length of cloth that is elegantly wrapped around the waist and securely tied, and the upper garment. The Spiritual Significance: The Yagnopavit Dress carries deep spiritual symbolism, marking the transition of a young boy into a new phase of life. During the Upanayana, the sacred thread is placed over the left shoulder, and the boy is initiated into the study of the Vedas and the pursuit of knowledge. This attire signifies purity, growth, and the assumption of new responsibilities. A Blend of Tradition and Elegance: While rooted in tradition and spirituality, the Yagnopavit Dress also exudes elegance and beauty. The upper garment is often a work of art, with exquisite embroidery and designs that celebrate India's rich textile heritage. This blend of traditional significance and aesthetic charm makes it a timeless and cherished garment. Craftsmanship and Heritage: The creation of a Yagnopavit Dress involves the skills of master craftsmen who meticulously craft each upper garment. These artisans pay meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that the garment not only carries cultural weight but also showcases the artistic excellence inherent in Indian craftsmanship. Preserving a Legacy: The Yagnopavit Dress continues to hold a central place in various Hindu rituals and ceremonies, preserving a legacy that has endured for generations. Families proudly pass down this tradition to their children, emphasizing the importance of culture and spirituality in today's rapidly changing world.   The Yagnopavit Dress is more than just clothing; it's a living testament to India's rich culture and enduring traditions. It bridges the gap between spirituality and style, making it a cherished and timeless garment. As young boys don this attire during significant ceremonies, it carries with it the weight of tradition and the promise of a future enriched by the values and heritage it represents...
